What to wear for cross-country skis?
Are you just commencing your adventure with cross-country skis? From the very start, you will be moving slowly, and, even though your movements will be more like march than like running, your blood rate is bound to increase, and, perhaps, you will sweat. A reasonably chosen outfit will improve the comfort of running, but also protect you against the unpleasant consequences of freezing through and excessive exposure of the organism to winds. The best choice of clothing is that in accordance with the principle of several layers, colloquially speaking ’like an onion’.
The layer closest to our body ought to be that of thermo-active underwear, thanks to which our sweat will be requested to leave outside, and the body will remain dry. The second layer is a blouse. You can put on a synthetic blouse for runners, and in the case of severe cold a thin fleece. Cotton tracksuits are better left at home because no part of your clothing should absorb moist.
As the top layer, we put on, depending upon temperature, the force of wind and precipitation, a jacket. As the protection against snow and strong wind, the best of jackets with membranes, for example, goretex, but they usually have worse breathing properties and inferior moist removal properties, insufficient in the case of very strenuous effort. Jackets dedicated for cross-country skiing look like blouses, and in the front they are strengthened by a windproof fabric, and on the back and in the armpits, which means, where we sweat more intensively, they remove most well.
Trousers must, first and foremost, be comfortable. The ideal ones are typical running leggings, insulated in the case of severe cold from inside by adding ’moss’. You can also put on thermo-active long johns and running trousers. Special trousers to go with cross-country skis are frequently sown similarly to jackets, which means that the front is thicker to protect against wind, and the back is thinner.
Do not try running in skiing trousers with widened sleeves. What is comfortable on a slope, will not work on a running route.
An outfit is complemented by a cap. Remember that the organism loses as much as 30% of the heat through the head, and it is not worth risking of excessive cooling, neglecting this part of body.
Gloves are an important element of the equipment in cross-country skiing. There are thin and thicker versions, but what is the most important, is that they have strengthened parts between the thumb and the rest of the fingers, like in bicycle gloves. Gloves cannot be too tight , and they have to fit the palms, so as to make it possible to grasp sticks comfortably. Thick and rigid gloves for Alpine skis will be too warm, and they may not have enough space for them in sticks fasteners, whereas typical fleece gloves will be sliding on the handles of sticks, will fail to protect the inside of the palm against rubbing, and in the case of falling on a wet snow will soak through soon.
Remember, when you leave to go skiing, it is better to feel a little but cold (and that will disappear when you start running) than wear too warm clothes, which may overheat the organism!
